Lashing kitchen are such a luxury, but also a kind of necessity. I always only had a small room (or even a closet) to store the cleaning agents, the washing machine and everything else. It was always narrow and overcrowded (anything but beautiful to look at). When we moved to our current home, we inherited another small room. But this time we wanted to make something out of it. All laundry still had to be inserted, but we also wanted it to be organized and aesthetically appealing. We ordered new washing machine cabinets and storage, and they immediately made a big difference. I also added a pretty wooden art pressure to bring personality and fun into the room. But we still had a big problem. This room is actually a garage conversion, and the walls are made of plasterboard. That meant no nails, no screws, nothing heavy – not ideal for a room that should keep things. Not being able to hang up something had to go crazy, so I had to start thinking beyond the box.
Then I thought of wooden slatted walls that have become such a big trend. I even wrote about you in my previous blog post! Not only do they look great, they are also super functional thanks to their acoustic properties and versatility. We had already made good progress in the room, but the idea of the slat wall felt like the missing piece – a way to hang what we needed without damaging the walls. I also always loved what they look like. So that felt like the perfect opportunity to try it.
What we bought
Since we put ours in the laundry room (hidden and with low traffic), we did not have the need to spend a fortune. We have ordered our acoustic wooden panel from Amazon and it makes the work perfect. It is not a solid wood, but MDF slats with a real wooden veneer and a felt back, which makes it ideal for rooms such as laundry room or corridors. You could definitely use it in a living room, although I would not recommend hanging a little too heavy (like a television). It looks good, but it is not the strongest material, so you will be a little careful during installation to avoid the damage.
Cut in size and color
My husband cut the panel to size with a circular saw, which was a quick (but very chaotic!) Work. I wanted the panel to run from the editor to the ceiling, so that we didn’t have to cut it too much. The color looked more annoying than in the picture. I would not call it a “natural oak” – it was more of a slight oak or an ash tone. So I colored it so that I correspond to the same color as our art female. (See above!) The panel took the wooden stain beautiful and I only needed two layers to reach the desired shadow. The only thing I regret is not to dye it before we installed it. It would have been much less chaotic! I had to be very careful not to get the stain on the cupboards or walls. So if you plan something similar, I definitely recommend coloring the panels before you set it up – it saves you a lot of trouble.
INSTALLATION
As soon as the panel is too big and colored, it was time to install it. I wanted it to run from the envelope to the ceiling to make the room optimal. Some panels are equipped with a self -adhesive, but we decided to screw the plate directly into the wall instead. If you go this route, make sure you use black screws so you insert yourself with the back of the felt. The panels are super light and easy to install. You can also do it yourself. Be particularly careful when drilling, as the material can easily cut chip.
Acoustic panel hooks
I really wanted black hooks that would fit in. Even if the slat panel gives an entertaining touch, the goal was that it is functional and a nice design function. I found the perfect acoustics panel hook on Etsy (where else?!), And frankly I can’t accuse you of. They are specially designed for this type of wooden plate. Simply make sure that you measure the SLAT splitting width before ordering. I ordered A 13 mm width, That fits perfectly with the panel. Thanks to the “Click and Go” function, they are pretty easy to install, but I have not yet tried to remove one. You could damage the wood if you pull it out too tightly, so I prefer not to move it as soon as you are switched on. I love how minimal and discretely they look. You could definitely decide more playful shapes to make it a little more funky, but I wanted something simple that a few cleaning brushes and essentials could record. And I have to say – I love how they developed. The whole setup looks even better than I imagined. Not bad for a random idea on Sunday evening, right?
Total costs
Overall, the entire DIY Wood Slat Wall project only cost us £ 86, which in my opinion is pretty good. To be honest, it looks far more expensive and more professional than they would expect for this price. We already had the wooden stain, drill and a few other tools on hand, so that the total amount could of course be a bit higher if you start over. Nevertheless, I think it is worth doing it, and since it is a pretty simple project, there is not much to lose if you get things messed up.
